Selena Gomez has come under fire after she was accused of lip-syncing throughout her performance at the American Music Awards.

The 25-year-old made her return to the stage at the annual event to perform her new single Wolves weeks after undergoing a kidney transplant.

Gomez, who is rumoured to be dating Justin Bieber, emerged from a car wreck in a white slip dress and trainers with blood running from her knees before being joined by a group of backing dancers.

But she was soon slated online, with many accusing her of looking dejected and not singing live.

One viewer tweeted: “Honestly so offended by Selena's lip syncing.”

Another wrote: “Selena serving one of the worst lip syncing performance ever yikes.”

Fans of the Bad Liar singer were quick to shut down the criticism claiming she had suffered a panic attack moments before taking to the stage at the Microsoft Theatre.

The Twitter account Selena Gomez News posted: “There was a rumour that Selena had a panic attack during her performance, we don't know how true this is but could be why she looked sad throughout. But no matter what we are grateful for everything she has done and #WeAreProudOfSelena.”

Another posted: “Can people not trash Selena Gomez about her performance because she was apparently lip synching? I’d like to see you go through what she has in the past year and perform in front of millions.”

Gomez was among a string of stars including Nick Jonas, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato and Christina Aguilera who performed at Sunday night’s ceremony.

The Candyman singer paid tribute to Whitney Houston to mark the 25th anniversary of The Bodyguard. Pink was accused of 'cringing' as Aguilera attempted to hit a high note while performing I Will Always Love You.

Niall Horan, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes and Keith Urban were among the big winners, while Diana Ross was honoured with the American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Standard Online has contacted a representative for Gomez for comment.
