Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner has revealed that she was banned from washing her hair while playing Sansa Stark on the hit HBO show.

The 22-year-old is well known for her character’s striking red hair – despite currently sporting a shorter platinum blonde style – but described her Game of Thrones preparation as “disgusting.”

The actress opened up about the unexpected downsides of starring in one of the biggest shows on the planet in a new interview with InStyle, revealing that she had to skip hair washes when her character’s storyline changed dramatically in later series.

“For the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl,” she said.

“Towards season five they started asking me not to wash my hair and it was really disgusting.”

“For a couple of years I was living with pretty greasy hair,” she added, describing it as “really itchy.”

The show’s wintery setting didn’t help matters either, as Turner explained: “We would have the snow machines going so we would have little snow paper particles that would get stuck in the grease.”

“It was disgusting.”

Turner went on to reveal that her co-star Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the fantasy drama, had to spend the most time in the hairdresser’s chair “because she needed a bald cap, a wig and then had intricate design on the wig.”

The actress will reprise her role in the final series of Game of Thrones, which is set to air on April 14.
