Stephen Fry has confirmed rumours that he is planning to marry his partner Elliott Spencer, who is 30 years his junior.

Fry, 57, took to Twitter to tell fans that he is “very very happy” to announce the news that he is set to marry 27-year-old Spencer, but that he had hoped for a private affair.

He wrote: “Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!”

Clearly surprised by the congratulatory messages he later added: “Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx.”

Fry's personal assistant said: "Stephen Fry is very happy and proud to say that he has set the wheels in motion for a wedding sometime in the future but no date has been set due to a busy work schedule."

According to The Sun the QI host has given a formal notice to wed Spencer, at a register office in Dereham, Norfolk, near to where he grew up.

Fry has largely kept his love life private, although he reportedly separated from a long-term partner five years ago.

In his latest autobiography, More Fool Me, the actor confessed to taking cocaine in several high profile venues including Buckingham Palace, the House of Commons, and the BBC Television Centre.

The comedian said he took the drug over 15 years until 2001 and spent "tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of pounds, and as many hours, sniffing, snorting and tooting away time".
