Pop superstar Taylor Swift stunned a US army veteran when she turned up at his house on and performed a surprise gig.

World War Two soldier Cyrus Porter, 96, has previously travelled to St Louis and Memphis from his home in New Madrid, Missouri to watch the singer in concert but was shocked when she knocked on his door on Monday.

Mr Porter hosted 72 people for a family Christmas a day earlier with many relatives still there when Miss Swift made her sudden appearance.

He said: “My daughter opened the door and said, 'It's Taylor Swift!’

"I couldn't believe it. It's not a miracle but I'd say it's pretty close."

The star spent around an hour talking to Mr Porter and his family before she performed a rendition of her hit “Shake It Off” on the back porch as dozens joined in.

Mr Porter added: “The whole family was singing along on the back porch. I though the police might come by!"

Mr Porter said he was a classic country music fan and had followed the 27-year-old’s career since she released her debut album as a teenager in 2006.

"The way she puts on a show is what I like," he said.

It wasn't revealed how Miss Swift came to find out about Mr Porter's fandom, but he said that he was "proud of her to take the time out to do something like that for an old country boy."

After fighting in Germany, Mr Porter spent decades working and farming in Missouri. He's been married to his wife, 89-year-old Harriett, for 69 years and raised nine children.

The couple have a combined 49 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
