Two Door Cinema Club have revealed that they nearly broke up and came to a “catastrophic end” as they struggled to cope with their worldwide success.

But instead the Northern Irish trio took an extended break from each other to find inspiration for their third album.

Singer Alex Trimble, who was admitted to hospital in 2014 with ulcers caused by stress, told the Standard: “We had to ease back into it. Everything came to such a catastrophic end, the last time round.

"We all got sick, I ended up in hospital, we weren’t on very good terms personally.

“We needed a big break. Coming back we knew we had to get into it the right way so we could stay sane and healthy — eventually get to the time where we were actually having a good time again.”

Trimble added: “We needed to live our lives apart. I hired a Mustang and did a lot of driving in America.”

Lead guitarist Sam Halliday stayed more traditional, explaining: “It was DIY for me — doing the house up — something else to focus on.”

But the band have now returned, with their third album Gameshow due for release next month. They will officially launch it with an intimate gig at The Dome, Tufnell Park, on Wednesday.
