Justin Bieber has fuelled his pop brat reputation after a video emerged of him winking, pretending to fall asleep and patronising a lawyer while giving evidence for a court hearing.

The 20-year-old singer was called to Miami over a lawsuit that claims he instructed his bodyguards to confront a photographer who was then assaulted. Leaked footage of the deposition video appears to show him being rude and sarcastic to the photographer’s lawyer.

Sitting in a leather chair with a horse statue in the background, Bieber spins from side to side as he is interviewed, closes his eyes for extended periods and says: “I don’t have to listen to anything you have to say.”

His behaviour becomes erratic when he is questioned about on-off girlfriend Selena Gomez.

The lawyer asks: “Have you ever talked to Selena Gomez and discussed your feelings about paparazzi?” The singer puts his head in his hands, sighs, and says repeatedly: “Don’t ask me about her again.” His lawyers then permit him to take a break and he rips his microphone off before storming out.

In the footage, obtained by celebrity gossip website TMZ, he claims: “This isn’t journalism” and later cheekily refers to the lawyer as US broadcast journalist Katie Couric.

When asked: “Do you remember being in Australia ever?” Bieber shrugs and says: “I don’t know if I’ve been to Australia. Have I been to Australia?”

He was being questioned about claims that he ordered his bodyguard to seize a memory card from a photographer. Jeffrey Binion claims one of Bieber’s minders choked him and is suing the star and his bodyguard.

In the video, Bieber has to be asked to look at the screen to watch footage of the alleged incident and repeatedly asks “Is this a film?” until the lawyer pauses the video. The singer also claimed not to know R&B star Usher, who helped discover him. Looking straight into the camera he says: “I was found on YouTube. I think that I was detrimental to my own career” before correcting himself to say “instrumental”.

In recent months, the singer has been charged with assaulting a limousine driver and was held for drink driving after drag racing in a Lamborghini.
