Bobbi Kristina Brown, the 22-year-old only daughter of singer Whitney Houston, has died six months after being found unconscious in a bathtub in a tragedy eerily reminiscent of the death of her famous mother.

Reports in the United States suggested last night that police may launch a murder investigation in the wake of Brown's death.

The aspiring singer who inherited her mother's entire £60 million pop fortune was placed in a medically-induced coma after being found face-down in a bath at her home in Roswell, Georgia, on January 31.

But she was moved to a hospice after her condition deteriorated and her chances of recovery faded.

In a statement released last night, Brown's family confirmed she had died.

"Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July 26 2015, surrounded by her family. She is finally at peace in the arms of God.

"We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months."

But while her mother's drug overdose death was ruled an accident, doubts have surfaced about the circumstances surrounding Brown's drowning.

According to TMZ celebrity website, the US authorities consider Brown's boyfriend Nick Gordon as a "person of interest" in the death.

Gordon was taken in as a boy by Houston and called himself Brown's "husband" although her father, singer Bobby Brown, later claimed they never married.

Gordon and a friend, Max Lomas, found Brown in the bath and police said there were bruises on her face and body and she had a missing tooth.

He also faces a £6 million civil lawsuit alleging he attacked Brown on January 31. The suit alleges Gordon took money from Brown and caused her emotional and physical abuse. He wasn't available for comment early today.

Last night, celebrities and fans sent messages of condolence to the heartbroken family.

Oprah Winfrey tweeted: "Peace at Last! #BobbiKristina" while R&B singer Miss Elliott wrote: "My heart is truly heavy. May u rest in peace with your mommy... sending prayers 2 the Brown/Houston family."

US daytime talk show host Dr. Phil added: "Deeply saddened by the news of Bobbi Kristina's passing. Sending thoughts and prayers from all of us at Dr. Phil." And Kylie Jenner said she would "never forget" the 22-year-old.

A statement on Whitney Houston's official Facebook page last night read: "It is hard to say goodbye. On Sunday, July 26, Bobbi Kristina Brown made her transition peacefully.

"As Bobbi Kristina would say: 'The wind is behind me and the sun is in my face'."

Brown's close family arrived at the Peachtree Christian Hospice on Saturday to say farewell to Brown as it became clear she was slipping away.

Brown's parents, Houston and Bobby Brown, both struggled with substance abuse and divorced when their daughter was 14. Houston described their 15-year marriage as drug-and alcohol-fueled.

The couple's tempestuous relationship was chronicled in the short-lived television series, Being Bobby Brown. Bobbi Kristina was hospitalized twice with anxiety after her mother's death.

Brown and her family also starred in a short-lived Lifetime reality series, titled The Houstons: On Our Own.
