BBC Breakfast newscaster Kate Sanderson has been poached by Channel Five bosses to present their weekly news.

The 36-year-old former Watchdog and Newsround presenter is set to follow in the footsteps of Kirsty Young, presiding over the channel's flagship Thursday, Friday and weekend evening bulletins.

Sanderson, who is engaged to millionaire former Dome boss P-Y Gerbeau, will join Five on 3 January, to coincide with a major relaunch of the channel's news services.

From the New Year, Sky takes over from ITN as producer of Five News - the broadcaster's first terrestrial news programme. While Young will continue to present the 5.30pm and 7pm news and later hourly bulletins on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Sanderson will take over the 7pm and late-night slot during the rest of the week.

Sky News Today anchor Julie Etchingham has been drafted in to take over the 5.30pm news on Thursday and Friday - in addition to her normal Sky duties. A Five insider said: "She'll be in people's living rooms four nights a week and doing the bulletins that Kirsty Young occupies at the start of the week. It's a brilliant move forward for her."
