Any young chef serving below-par food to Gordon Ramsay knows what to expect — and it's not pretty. But when his family are involved as well, the Kitchen Nightmare really begins.

On last night's episode of the US version of Hell's Kitchen, the celebrity chef was joined by his wife Tana and their children Megan, 12, twins Holly Anna and Jack, 10, and Matilda, aged eight.

They were there to mark the 99th and 100th episodes of the competition in a two-hour prime-time special.

But the celebratory mood turned sour when hapless chef Vinny Accardi Jr served a sub-standard risotto to the Ramsay table.

"That's old!" yelled Ramsay. "This table you just sent me, that happens to be for my family.

"And even if it wasn't for my family they deserve a fresh risotto, you dirty little f***," he told the New Yorker.

"I'd make your family, your children, your wife a fresh f***ing risotto.

For a simple dish — essentially rice, stock, onions, and whatever else you want to put into — the risotto seemed to cause contestants a lot of grief. When she seemed to be losing control of her rice, another contestant, Jillian Flathers, shouted: "The freaking risotto, man, that s**t hates me. I just want to kick risotto's ass."

It is far from the first time in his TV career Ramsay has been served "off" food — although never before to his children as well. In the first episode of the original UK version of Kitchen Nightmares, viewers saw Ramsay retching in a restaurant courtyard after being served a "rancid" scallop on black pudding by chef Tim Gray.

In last night's anniversary episode, special guests in the dining room included chat show host Jerry Springer and his family. For the second hour the cooks competed against each other as the winners of the previous seasons made guest appearances in the dining room.

Amazingly, despite his slip-up, Vinny survived and in the end it was fellow contestant and New Yorker Boris Poleschuk, who Ramsay said had a "big heart", who got the chop.
