There were fears for Nicole Kidman's health last night after it was reported that the star has been tested for osteoporosis.

The brittle bone disease, which in extreme cases can be fatal, can be caused by excessive weight loss.

Miss Kidman, 37, became so concerned that she may have the disease, which is normally found in women who have gone through the menopause, that she had tests for the disease in Los Angeles, it was reported last night.

The news of her test came as sources close to the 5ft 10in actress told a U.S. magazine that she is her thinnest ever - weighing just eight stone - after splitting from singer Lenny Kravitz and working on back-to-back movies.

'Overworried, overworked and underfed, that's Nicole,' a source told the National Enquirer magazine. 'She's been unhappy with her life since she split with Lenny Kravitz earlier this year and frantically working on one film project after another.

'She went straight from Stepford Wives and Birth into The Interpreter and now Bewitched. And when she's overworked she doesn't eat right.'

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. It can impair the ability to walk unassisted, cause a hunchback, and can lead to prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Miss Kidman showed how frail she was

butt like Jennifer Lopez. I honestly would! But I can't get them and I'm not going to have surgery, so there it is, guys. I haven't changed, I'm the same weight I've always been. But I've got a ballet dancer's body. You're born with what you're born with.'

Miss Kidman broke up with Kravitz, her first proper boyfriend since splitting from Tom Cruise, at the end of last year after discovering that he had cheated on her.

A source said: 'She threw herself back into work to distract herself from the emotional pain. Since then she's lost weight.

'Everyone is worried about her as she is the thinnest she has ever been.'

Last night a spokesman for Miss Kidman confirmed she did go to the hospital, adding: 'It was for a check-up that she has every year. She is in perfect health.'
