Jennifer Aniston has revealed the "physical" impact behind playing the lead character in her upcoming movie Cake.

In the film, Aniston, 46, plays the part of Claire Bennett, a woman crippled with chronic physical pain who struggles to deal with her emotions and anger.

Despite playing a dark character the actress said she was able to separate her role from her normal life.

"I don't take stuff home, I really am good about 'wrap' and 'we're done'," she said.

"If you do your homework you know when to just pull out the cards for the day about what's going on.

"The only thing I took home sometimes were a lot of these physical pains in my body from the character."

While the film itself received mix reviews, Aniston was nominated for a Golden Globe after an impressive performance.

The Horrible Bosses star, who is to star in Peter Bogdanovich's motion picture She's Funny That Way later this year, has said there are still many actors and directors she would like to feature alongside.

When asked about who in particular she wanted to work with, she replied: "Oh god, there are many, many directors I want to work with, and many actors I would want to work with: David O'Russell, Steven Soderbergh, Wes Anderson, there's Kathryn Bigelow. There's amazing, wonderful people out there.

"I always feel like I'm only just beginning so I'm excited to see what's about to happen."

Cake is in cinemas from Friday 20 February
