Peter Andre (pictured here with wife Jordan) is suspected of suffering from meningitis

Andre's wife, the model Jordan, who is pregnant with their second child, was said to be 'frantic' with worry as she maintained a bedside vigil at the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.

A spokeswoman for the couple said in a statement: "Following recent tests on Peter Andre at the East Surrey Hospital, it is believed that Peter is suffering from suspected meningitis.

"Peter was admitted last weekend, and at this time we do not have an expected date of discharge."

The statement asked the Press "to allow Katie to continue as normal, and support Peter and the family during this worrying time".

There are two types of meningitis - viral and bacterial - and the spokeswoman said it was not yet known which of these Andre may be suffering from.

Viral meningitis is the most common but is usually not serious.

Bacterial meningitis, which includes the meningococcal strain of the disease, is more rare but around one in 10 cases are fatal.

The statement added: "We would ask all the press to respect Peter and Katie's privacy, and to not contact or visit the hospital."

Jordan : 'frantic' with worry

Australian Andre, 34, fell ill at the couple's home in Ockley, Surrey, on Saturday.

Jordan, who is pregnant with their second child, dialled 999 and he was taken to hospital, where he remained overnight.

Doctors discharged him on Sunday but he returned hours later and has remained there ever since. Andre has undergone numerous tests, including a brain scan.

He first began feeling ill during a promotional tour of the US with Jordan earlier this month, and spent a week in bed with a stomach complaint when they returned to the UK.

A friend of the couple said: "When he was taken to hospital, he was so weak he had to be helped on board the ambulance.

"Jordan is frantic with worry. Obviously she's desperate to get to the bottom of what's wrong."

The pair are in the middle of filming the latest series of their fly-on-the-wall TV show.

They married in 2005 after meeting on the ITV1 reality show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!.

Jordan - real name Katie Price - is expecting their second child in June.

They have a 22-month-old son Junior, and Jordan has a four-year-old son, Harvey, by footballer Dwight Yorke.

Harvey was born blind and suffering from other medical problems.

This is not the first health scare to hit the family.

On New Year's Eve, Harvey was taken to hospital after scalding himself in a bath at the couple's home.

And in 2002, Jordan was treated for a rare form of cancer. Doctors removed a malignant growth from her finger.
