Seeing in the flesh images as iconic and postcard-friendly as 'Nighthawks', is always interesting and occasionally disappointing.

Once this impressive show is over, the bulk of its paintings will be heading home to the US, unlikely to return in such numbers for decades.

Try to resist the temptation to rush straight to those you know best, and linger a little over the less well-known pictures, often just as haunting, just as mysterious.
