His bizarre performance at the World Music Awards may have caused hundreds of fans to demand a refund.

But Michael Jackson showed last night that he can always rely on an army of diehard supporters to bring adulation - and chaos - wherever he goes.

The 48 year-old singer was mobbed as he had a night out watching Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Fans lined the streets to catch a glimpse of him as he left. Others, surrounded his car and held aloft signs saying "Hug Me" and "I Love You Michael."

A teary-eyed Jackson, mascara running down his face, waved and blew kisses at his adoring public before being driven off.

The singer is due to fly back to his home in Bahrain this weekend. On Wednesday, the star left the World Music Awards to boos from a crowd who had expected him to sing more than the four lines he mumbled.
