Chris Evans's TV comeback was in tatters last night after the axe fell on his latest show, Boys And Girls.


The programme, produced by the man who made his name devising and presenting Don't Forget Your Toothbrush, was expected to be a hit.

But it was dumped from its Saturday prime-time slot on Channel 4 after poor reviews and ratings - and station boss Mark Thompson said yesterday there would be no second series.

He also revealed there would be no more Celebrity Big Brother, saying he was sceptical about 'how different and interesting' the celebrity version could be made.

Girls And Boys was Evans' first major project since 2001, when he was sacked as a Virgin Radio presenter. An £8million unfair dismissal case is still working its way through the courts.

The show, presented by Vernon Kay, involved 100 contestants competing for a chance to spend £100,000. The final episode last month attracted only 1.1million viewers.

'That one will not be back,' said Mr Thompson. 'It was an experiment to do something big and different on a Saturday night which didn't get the kind of audience we would have liked.'

Evans, who recently conceded he had been 'in the wrong game' as a presenter and was more comfortable producing, will continue to work behind the scenes on Five's Terry And Gabby Show, and Live With...
