Eva Longoria, star of Desperate Housewives, was taken to hospital after being struck on the head by a falling pole during a location shoot for the second series of the TV show.

The 30- year- old actress , who plays adulterous Gabrielle Solis in the Channel 4 drama, was filming a prison scene at Pasadena City College in California when she was hit by a collapsing piece of construction equipment.

She was checked for concussion in hospital before being treated for an egg-sized lump on the side of her head.

A spokesman for the star said she would be returning to work as scheduled, adding: 'She's got a hard head.'
