Another Scotland defeat

Scotland 1 Romania 2

John Kennedy's Scotland debut came to a premature end at Hampden Park last night.

The 20-year-old Celtic defender was stretchered off just 15 minutes into the match after a dangerous challenge from Wolves striker Ioan Ganea appeared to catch him high on the leg.

Kennedy's injury marred a night when Scotland were outplayed for long spells. Romania started confidently and carved out a half-chance in the seventh minute. Ganea exchanged passes with Florin Cernat but screwed his shot wide.

Another chance was missed just after the half-hour mark when Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu crossed to Ganea, who fired over. But Romania deservedly went ahead in the 37th minute as Colin Cameron conceded a free-kick and then deflected Cristian Chivu's long-range shot beyond Paul Gallacher.

Scotland's situation worsened in the 51st minute when Romania sliced them open again. Daniel Pancu exchanged passes with Mutu before shooting in. Vogts responded by sending on James McFadden for Kenny Miller and the move paid off just before the hour, as the Everton forward jinked past several defenders to fire home.

It was Scotland's first goal in a friendly at Hampden for eight years but it wasn't enough, as Romania held on.

Despite this latest defeat, boss Berti Vogts maintains his team are on the right track. He said: 'I was pleased, we were playing against a very good side and it was OK.

'We were missing eight or nine key players. It needs a little more time but, in the second half, the movement was OK.'
