Arsenal want me, says Celta keeper

14 April 2012

Celta Vigo goalkeeper Manuel Almunia today claimed he is on the verge of joining Arsenal.

The 27-year-old, who was on loan at Albacete in the Primera Liga last season, said he is poised to join the Premiership champions subject to a brief trial at Highbury.

"I'm really proud that a side like Arsenal have picked me out," Almunia told Spanish newspaper Marca. "I never expected this."

Almunia signed for Celta on a free transfer from Osasuna three years ago but has never played for the club who instead loaned him out to Eibar, Recreativo Huelva and Albacete.

He began last season as second choice to Carlos Roa at Albacete but an injury to the Argentine propelled him into the first team. Almunia played a large role in helping them retain their top-flight status after a difficult campaign.
