Australia star Phillip Hughes flops with bat again

13 April 2012

Australia's Phillip Hughes — a sensation in the county championship — continued his mediocre one-day form after being dismissed early on in Middlesex's Friends Provident Trophy Group B clash with Scotland.

Having racked up three consecutive centuries in the longer form of the game, Hughes's great start has come to a halt in this tournament, with the opener out for seven at Warwickshire on Tuesday and being bowled for just 11 by Andre Nel today.

Middlesex recovered, though, with Owais Shah scoring 42 as they brought up the 100 and Shaun Udal hit an unbeaten 79 as the county side made 280 for four in 50 overs.

In Group A, Hampshire restricted Worcestershire's innings to 246 for eight at New Road.

Captain Dimitri Mascarenhas was instrumental with two wickets and two catches, while Billy Taylor sent a further three batsmen packing.

Steven Davies top scored for the home side on 34 with nobody making a significant stand at the crease. The day's other Group A contest between Ireland and Leicestershire was held up due to the wet weather.

Friends Provident: Dublin: Ireland v Leics (rain); Worcester: Worcs 246-8 v Hants 40-4 (12ov); The Grange: Middx 280-4 v Scotland 39-1 (8ov); Taunton: Somerset 135-2 (22ov) v Warwicks (rain).
