Beacon in the spotlight

Beacon School from Crowborough celebrated the opening of their new academywith a 21-12 win over Hove Park on their Daily Mail debut.

Sam Denereaz putthem ahead with a penalty before Hove winger Keeba Edwards broke throughfor a try.

Fly half Denearaz restored Beacon's lead with another penaltyand after half time Tom Carruthers, an England 16 Group player last season,ran in from 40 metres with Denereaz converting.

He slotted another penaltyto make it 16-5 but Hove fought back and scored their second try throughRob Smith, converted by Ben Gating. So, 16-12 going into what was afiercely contested last ten minutes but Denereaz crowned a fine performanceby pouncing on a handling error to score the decisive try.

Beacon's rewardis a trip to Brighton College. Nine players were making their debut forLewes Tertiary College against Brighton, Hove and Sussex VIth Form Collegebut the team clicked immediately and scored eight tries in a 44-0 win.

There were two apiece for John Reed and Jim Prescott for a Lewes team whowere a real handful up front and produced swift hands in the backs.

Triesfrom Kevin Danagher Smith, Max McAlister and Andrew Keelaghan gave Wortha19-3 win over Cardinal Newman from Hove but Collyers VIth Form Collegestrong running backs were unable to give them victory against Christ'sHospital.

Collyers were heading for a 10-0 half time lead but a sniping runproduced a try for scrum half Alex Woodbridge, converted by Paul Rider onhis debut.

Woodbridge touched down agai after sustained pressure andRider's penalty closed out the game.
