Burton in fight to keep squad

Wimbledon manager Terry Burton is worried about what will happen to his playing squad if the club is not allowed to move to Milton Keynes.

His team completed the double over Division One lead-ers Manchester City yesterday amid protests from supporters against the planned relocation.

But Burton, who keeps his opinion about Wimbledon leaving London to himself, knows that if they stay at Sel-hurst Park his employers will use the most valuable members of his squad to reduce losses of £20,000 a day.

He said: "If we are still here six months down the line with small crowds and losing money, some of the players who beat City will have gone or be going."

Wimbledon are waiting for a hearing date from the Football League to present their case for moving to Milton Keynes.

They have been turned down by the League once before and had an appeal request rejected but a Football Association arbitration panel ruled the club's application was not adequately considered and should be heard again.

Burton said that none of the off-field activity disrupts him or his players and that was evident yesterday as they outplayed City.

Neil Shipperley scored Wimbledon's goals. The first was a low half-volley past goalkeeper Nicky Weaver from close range after 33 minutes.

His second was a header into the far corner in the 69th minute after Ali Benarbia had levelled for the visitors. To add to City's problems, Stuart Pearce was sent off late in the game.

Keegan said: "I think Burton deserves a lot of credit. When all that stuff is going on off the pitch and he gets a side to play how I wanted my side to play, he deserves praise."
