Campbell dropped by answer-phone

12 April 2012

England defender Sol Campbell has claimed he was told he had been left out of new manager Steve McClaren`s first squad - by answer-phone.

The Portsmouth centre-back, currently top of the league with Harry Redknapp`s team, follows David Beckham in claiming he was cast aside by McClaren.

He said: "He [McClaren] left one message on the answer-phone to tell me I wasn't in the first squad. That was it. We haven`t spoken since. Maybe he could have done it differently. I have got 69 caps but that`s the way he runs his show now."

He added: "All I can do is play for Pompey, that`s it. Whatever will be will be. It`s not up to me if I can still play for England but I would never turn my back on England."
