Champions League priority for Silvestre

12 April 2012

Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre is more concerned about winning the Champions League than the Barclays Premier League.

The versatile Frenchman is hoping to get a taste of the action on Wednesday when United go head to head with Chelsea in the final of Europe's top club competition.

Silvestre said: "The Champions League is much more important for me. In the league you have 20 teams competing but in the Champions League only two teams reach it which makes it more special. We have had a good run so we expect to be champions in Moscow again."

Silvestre, who has shown a return to form in the latter part of the season after recovering from a knee injury, may have to settle for a place on the bench in Russia.

He said: "I had a feeling we would go far in the Champions League and do well in the league. That was great motivation for me to get a lot of work into my rehabilitation.

"I feel great and the season is going to be too short for me. But all the injuries are behind me and I feel really happy to be back."

United conceded only 22 league goals in their title-winning campaign and that has given them confidence going into the match at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Silvestre said: "We have been good at defending this year so that will not be a problem for us. We just have to do what we normally do and make sure we don't concede a goal.

"We've got what it takes to score goals. We have proved that.

"I'm glad we are playing Chelsea because they are a fine side and I just hope it's going to be a good show for the fans around the world."
