England slump to Bangladesh loss in World Cup

England slumped to a two-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the World Cup in Chittagong today.

Imrul Kayes top-scored with 60 as Bangladesh reached the required 225 with an over to spare in the Group B clash.

Earlier, Eoin Morgan was the only England batsman to shine during a stuttering first-innings performance.

Morgan was recalled to the squad this week after Kevin Pietersen returned to England to have surgery on a hernia problem, and looked at home straight away. The Irishman scored 63 from 72 deliveries but was dismissed at a crucial time, leaving his team-mates to subside to 225 all out from 49.4 overs against a team who have beaten them only once in one-day internationals.

Jonathan Trott also made 67 from 99 deliveries and shared a stand of 109 in 22 overs for the fourth wicket with Morgan. Despite their contributions, England, with the exception of Morgan, never managed to master the slow, low surface.

When Bangladesh, who had won the toss, began their chase, their explosive opener Tamim Iqbal was instantly into his stride. England took the field knowing that victory would seal a quarter-final spot after West Indies beat Ireland earlier.

But Tamim and opening partner Imrul Kayes took Bangladesh to 50 from only 43 deliveries, and a poor start from opening pair Jimmy Anderson and Ajmal Shahzad meant Andrew Strauss was forced to turn to the off-spin of Graeme Swann after only seven overs.

It was Tim Bresnan who struck the first blow when he bowled key man Tamim for 38, made from just 26 deliveries. Anderson then made his first serious contribution with a direct hit to run out Junaid Siddique, and Shahzad came to the party shortly afterwards, producing a superb delivery to bowl Raqibul Hasan off stump for a duck.

With Pietersen and Stuart Broad having gone home with injuries, Paul Collingwood and Shahzad were recalled to the team.

Mike Yardy, who played in the narrow win over South Africa, was omitted this time, leaving Swann as the only specialist spinner in the XI.

Pietersen was replaced at the top of the order by wicketkeeper Matt Prior, but the switch backfired.

After left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak had bowled a wide ball, Prior inexplicably wandered out of his ground. His opposite number Mushfiqur Rahim was alert to Prior's error, first whipping off the bails and then removing a stump to make absolutely sure.

Strauss followed soon after and Ian Bell's departure, for a tortuous five from 23 balls, left England 53 for three, with 16.4 overs already bowled. With the Bangladesh spinners in total control, it was left to Morgan to give the innings some badly-needed zest, and he struck seven boundaries in moving to 50 from 60 deliveries.

Yet when he had reached 63, Morgan attempted to slog-sweep off-spinner Naeem Islam for another boundary but was brilliantly held in the deep by Kayes. Scoring as slowly as he had, Trott should have made sure he at least saw England through, but he holed out to Siddique at long-off as the overs ran out.
