Kevin Pietersen does not need surgery on his injured right knee and should be fit for the two-Test rematch with New Zealand in England starting on May 16 at Lord’s.

The England batsman returned home early from New Zealand last week for medical checks that revealed he is suffering from a bone injury and he has been placed in a brace for two weeks.

News of the diagnosis has been relayed to coach Andy Flower, still in New Zealand after the three-Test series finished all square yesterday, and he said: “Kevin has had a further scan, which confirms a bone injury and bone bruising.

“He will be off exercise, or any impact exercise, after that for another couple of weeks. Then he’ll start his rehab.

“We anticipate him playing a full part in the summer. He’s been in some pain, but we hope he’ll be ready to go by the start of the summer.”

England required a dramatic rearguard action from their middle and lower order to survive the final day of the series yesterday and ensure proceedings finished level with all three Tests drawn.

Flower conceded, however, that England should have done better against hosts ranked six places below.

“We expected, in these conditions, to play better,” he said. “One of the factors is that the New Zealand swing bowlers did swing it, and we didn’t consistently.”
