Middlesex have signed T20 cricket’s leading wicket-taker Dwayne Bravo for this summer’s Blast.

Bravo will play the first six games, making his debut against Surrey at Lord’s on July 6, before heading to the Caribbean Premier League, where he will captain the Trinbago Knight Riders.

He joins the Australia all-rounder Ashton Agar among Middlesex’s overseas contingent as they look to bolster their batting and bowling in the middle and death overs.

This is a departure for Middlesex, who in recent seasons have had Brendon McCullum sprinkling a little stardust but only serving to strengthen an already strong top order.

It is understood Bravo has chosen Lord’s over Canada, where he was considering playing in the inaugural Global T20 Canada, which is set to take place in Toronto in July. Other high-profile West Indian players are considering entering the draft — the details of which are being finalised — for a short stint before the Caribbean Premier League, rather than the Blast.

The double World T20-winner has 420 T20 wickets, 72 more than his closest rival Lasith Malinga. Only Kieron Pollard with 420 has played more than Bravo’s 385 T20 matches, while he has represented more than 15 franchises and teams. He had a six-game stint with Surrey in 2016 and has played a single game for Kent (2006) and Essex, who signed him purely for Finals Day in 2010.
