Virender Sehwag is sent packing

Shout out: Stuart Broad celebrates as he makes a dramatic impact in the Third Test at Edgbaston today, taking the wicket of Virender Sehwag with the first ball the batsman faced

Stuart Broad struck an early blow for England here today by removing Virender Sehwag for a first-ball duck on the India opener's return to the team.

Sehwag missed the first two Tests due to a shoulder problem but made the worst possible comeback as he gloved Broad's first delivery through to Matt Prior. Although umpire Steve Davis was initially unmoved, England reviewed the decision and HotSpot showed a clear mark where the ball had touched the glove.

India had been hoping that Sehwag's return would have galvanised their team, 2-0 down after two Tests of the four-match series. Sehwag averages above 50 in Test cricket and is one of the world's great attacking openers but before today had not played a first-class match since January.

His removal was another triumph for Broad, who had a dreadful time against Sri Lanka this summer, but has now claimed 16 wickets in this series.

Andrew Strauss won the toss and chose to bowl first on a greenish pitch, and after Sehwag's wicket Gautam Gambhir (28) and Rahul Dravid (12) both survived loud lbw appeals to guide India to 40 for one after nine overs.

Ravi Bopara was chosen in place of the injured Jonathan Trott for his first Test since the defeat by Australia at Headingley in 2009, the only change to the team that won at Trent Bridge last week.
