Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar has completed his remarkable Tour de France victory after the formality of Sunday’s final stage in Paris.
The 21-year-old, who becomes the second-youngest winner in the race’s history, caused a huge upset when he overhauled a 57-second deficit to long-time leader Primoz Roglic in Saturday’s time-trial stage.
Tradition dictates that the yellow jersey is not challenged on the final stage, leaving Pogacar to ride home and finish 59 seconds ahead of his countryman in the general classification, with Australia’s Richie Porte finishing third.
The UAE Team Emirates rider also claimed the polka dot jersey as king of the mountains and the white jersey for best young rider.
There was more joy on the final day for green jersey winner Sam Bennett as he claimed the stage victory in a sprint on the Champs-Elysees to round off a superb Tour.
The win was the Irishman’s second of the tour and saw him finish 96 points clear of seven-time winner Peter Sagan, who did not contest the intermediate sprint in the middle of the stage, allowing Bennet to acquire an insurmountable lead.
Team Ineos endured a frustrating Tour, having left both Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas out of a team led by defending champion Egan Bernal. The Colombian had struggled in the mountains, dropping out of contention on stage 15 before abandoning the race on 17.
