David Haye: I made you rich, Wladimir, so I deserve a rematch

No defence: David Haye had no answers against Wladimir Klitschko
13 April 2012

David Haye signalled today that he wants to carry on boxing after his 31st birthday - but only if Wladimir Klitschko grants him another fight.

The Briton had agreed with trainer Adam Booth that he would quit the sport on October 13 regardless of the result against the younger of the two Klitschko brothers in Hamburg.

But the pain of the unanimous points defeat on Saturday night has left Haye with the feeling of "unfinished business", especially because he had to fight with a broken toe.

When pressed on his plans for the future, Haye said: "I would fight Wladimir or his brother Vitali after my birthday, yes. But if they want me to have another two fights before meeting them then the answer would be 'no'."

The early indications from Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente is that they would not be interested in a rematch.

But money talks in boxing and Haye believes that making Wladimir a rich man - both expect to earn £15million from their contest - gives him the right to a second chance.

Haye, who lost his WBC heavyweight title, said: "Their manager doesn't like me but what he has to remember is that his fighter earned five times as much as he has ever earned before.

"I'm still the biggest fight out there for him now. Once the numbers come in and Wladimir realises what money he generated and that there is no other boxer who will generate as much interest and hype as me, then maybe he will come back.

"One thing he promised everyone is that he'd knock me out and give me a lesson but he hit me with his best punches and didn't put me down. Maybe he will want another chance to knock me out and finish my career.

"I believe on my night that if I was 100 per cent and things went as smoothly as I wanted them to, I could beat him."

Haye has been blasted for his showing having failed to live up to his pre-fight boasts that he was going to destroy the 35-year-old.

He had no complaints and added: "When someone does as much hype and trash talking as I do and it doesn't go your way, you have to expect people to put the boot in.

"Feel free to have a pop at me. I talked the talk and didn't walk the walk so you have to take the rough with the smooth."
