England closing in on win

England were closing in on victory on the final afternoon of the second Test against Bangladesh, with captain Alastair Cook leading the chase.

The Tigers battled well in the morning session to frustrate the tourists' hopes of an early finish but Shakib Al Hasan was last man out for 96 just after lunch to set a victory target of 209.

Jonathan Trott departed for 19 before Kevin Pietersen (24 not out) joined Cook (46no) to steer England to 95 for one at tea. With nine wickets in hand that left England needing 115 in the last session.

England started the morning hoping to knock over the tail in quick time and tee up a leisurely chase. But, as has been the case for much of the series, the Bangladesh lower-order had different ideas.

Shafiul Islam finally fell for 28, top-edging James Tredwell to give Trott a simple take after he had put down a difficult chance just an over earlier.

Naeem Islam tempered his natural aggression for half-an-hour before losing patience to feed Pietersen at mid-on off the bowling of Tredwell.

That made it 259 for eight but Shakib's measured knock ensured Bangladesh eked another 26 runs for the last two wickets and - importantly - kept England waiting until after to lunch to bat.

Steven Finn claimed Abdur Razzak lbw three balls before the break and Shakib was stumped off Tredwell four short of a second Test ton just nine balls after the resumption.

In reply England compiled steadily, but not dramatically, to reach 42 before Trott was run out for 19 by the alert Jahurul Islam.

Cook eased past 40 with fours off Mahmudullah and Shakib in successive overs but narrowly survived an lbw appeal having just got his pad outside the line before Pietersen also had a moment of fortune, almost cannoning a Mahmudullah delivery off his thigh pad and on to leg stump.
