Match abandoned as a draw, rain

England believe they will be ready for next week's First Test against Sri Lanka, despite another early finish today.

"There can't be any excuses," said acting-captain Andrew Flintoff after the rain-hit meeting with a President's XI ended as a draw.

"We have to hit the ground running in Galle on Tuesday. We've done a lot of training, worked hard in the nets and, with a couple more practice sessions, we'll be ready to go. Most of the batsmen spent time in the middle and all the bowlers put some miles into their legs."

As on Wednesday and again yesterday-the rain arrived late this afternoon and a re-start was never likely. At least the match position was relatively neat and tidy: the home side had just cleared their first-innings arrears by reaching 135 for four second time around when light drizzle developed into something more substantial.

The three spinners - Ashley Giles, Gareth Batty and Robert Croft - picked up a wicket apiece today. Assuming two play in Galle then Croft, as a late addition to the squad and the last man into action during this match, will almost certainly be the one who makes way.

But it may not be so straightforward in the pace department. Richard Johnson was rested here and Matthew Hoggard failed to pick up a wicket, but James Kirtley struck four times in the first innings and won another lbw decision today to press his case.

At least Mark Butcher confirmed he is in good form again following his meagre returns in Bangladesh. He was unbeaten with 151 when England declared on 314 for nine.
