England waiting on Flintoff scan

12 April 2012

England will today discover the extent of Andrew Flintoff's latest injury.

All-rounder Flintoff is a major doubt for the fourth Test in Barbados, starting next Thursday, after suffering a suspected muscle tear in his right hip.

The 31-year-old appeared to take a calculated gamble in the hastily-arranged third Test in Antigua by bowling on the final day, chasing victory, despite being in considerable pain.

He had an anti-inflammatory injection midway through the nailbiting draw to ease the problem.

"I was very concerned about him doing himself lasting damage - but I don't think that is the case, luckily," said acting coach Andy Flower.

"Before the day started, there was a line that he and Andrew Strauss had to walk - between using him when we needed him, and not doing himself lasting damage.

"I think they did that, but we will find out when we get the scan results."

England will consider fielding call-ups Ravi Bopara and Amjad Khan in the two-day match against a Barbados Cricket Association President's XI, which starts on Sunday, a matter of hours after they completed a long-haul trip from New Zealand.

Although they are unlikely to be under consideration for the Test, the tour management will be keen for everyone to get some action as they formulate contingency combinations for Flintoff's anticipated absence.
