Evans banking on City nerves

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is confident the longer the Premier League title race goes on, the more nervous Manchester City are likely to become.

United are facing up to what Evans believes will turn out to be a crucial week in the battle for supremacy. Two tough away games, at Norwich on Sunday and Tottenham the following Sunday would have been difficult anyway, even if they were not split by midweek internationals.

But Evans feels United's additional experience may eventually come into play in the run-in. He said: "The longer it goes, the more nervous they will get. They have been in front for quite a while now. But the gap is nothing. You never feel totally in control and I am sure they would like the season to end now."

That United are still in there scrapping away is something of a surprise given some of their calamitous results.

Thursday night's home defeat by Ajax can be added to the list given the Red Devils came perilously close to throwing away a three-goal advantage against opposition that could be regarded as limited at best.

Certainly Athletic Bilbao will offer a far greater test of United's Europa League credentials next month.

The same could also be said of Norwich. Pre-season favourites for the drop, few now believe they will come close to suffering that fate.

The Canaries have suffered just three defeats at Carrow Road this season - to West Brom, Arsenal and Tottenham - and Evans is not alone in being surprised at how well Paul Lambert's men have adapted.

"Norwich have done well since they got promoted," he said.

"It seems like a pretty tough place to go and Paul Lambert has got them working really hard. It is a game their fans and players will have been looking forward to all season. We did the job on them at Old Trafford. I am sure it will be different down there."
