Evasive set for Guineas despite scare

Simon Milham13 April 2012

Evasive is still on course to line up in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on 2 May despite suffering a setback, according to the colt's owners.

As short as 7-1 last night, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained son of Elusive Quality was pushed out to 12-1 with Blue Square after he was found to be lame after working at Newmarket this morning.

Chris Richardson, managing director of owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: "Sir Michael said that Evasive cantered twice this morning and took a lame step when he was having a pick of grass.

"The physio has been over him and as far as Sir Michael is concerned it appears to be an inconsequential problem and the Guineas is still the plan."

Evasive has yet to make his seasonal debut and was forced to bypass the trials at Newmarket and Newbury last weekend when he was found to have pus in a foot.

Naaqoos will not be lining up in the Newmarket Classic and will instead head for the French equivalent at Longchamp.

Chantilly trainer Freddie Head said: "I thought it was better to wait for Longchamp, where he can run in his garden."

Mastercraftsman has now replaced stablemate Rip Van Winkle as the Aidan O'Brien's No1 for the race and is 9-2 from 6s with Sky Bet. The colt has been eased out from 9-2 to 5s, while Craven Stakes winner Delegator remains 3-1 favourite.
