Federer through to last eight

12 April 2012

Roger Federer marched into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters on Thursday with a comprehensive victory over Guillermo Canas.

Federer, the defending champion and top seed here, needed just 53 minutes to see off his Argentinian opponent 6-0 6-3.

The Swiss ace was simply in a different class to Canas, especially in the first set which the world number one stormed through in double-quick time.

Canas, the 13th seed, put up a better fight in the second set but was still no match for Federer, who will now meet either Feliciano Lopez or Stefan Koubek for a place in the semi-finals.
