Fergie mocks Mourinho mind games

Legends: Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson at the book launch

Sir Alex Ferguson mocked Jose Mourinho yesterday for vainly trying to unsettle a Manchester United side that sits eight points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

After watching his own side drop another two points against Arsenal on Sunday, Mourinho told Ferguson he would be "in trouble" if he thought the title race was over.

But Ferguson, who was in London yesterday to launch the new United Opus history book, responded to that by saying: "We'll only be in trouble if we listen to Jose too much."

Ferguson was then interrupted by his own mobile phone and he jokingly declared: "It's Jose already. He's panicking." But Ferguson said his side would not be panicking, and they would not become complacent either. "The important thing is to keep our heads and not get carried away," he said. "I won't be letting the players or myself fall into the trap of thinking it's won."

Ferguson then offered his opinion on the recent comments of Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon, who said it was their intention to supersede United as the "number one football club in the world" by 2014.

"There's nothing wrong with people having ambition," said Ferguson dismissively. "But there are many other great clubs in the world and they've got a big mountain to climb to get above all of them. We will continue to do our talking on the pitch."
