Ferrari one-two in France

12 April 2012

Ferrari claimed their first one-two finish for 15 grands prix - but it was not enough to prevent Lewis Hamilton from extending his world championship lead.

Kimi Raikkonen led home Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa at the French Grand Prix after winning a pit-stop battle at Magny-Cours, with Hamilton having to settle for third.

However, heading into the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next Sunday, Hamilton commands a 14-point cushion over McLaren team- mate Fernando Alonso who could only finish seventh.

Remarkably, this was Hamilton's poorest result since he was third on his debut in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

In between times the 22-year-old Briton finished runner-up on four successive occasions prior to his back-to-back wins in Canada and the United States recently.

But it is now eight successive podiums for Hamilton, who was on a three-stop strategy, and while he will be happy with the gap to Alonso, the Ferraris are back in the picture.

Raikkonen, who saw one of the Ferrari personnel drop his bottle of champagne after the podium celebration, was still happy enough with his win.

"The start was fine for me, the car was good all the time and I was very happy," said Raikkonen.

"It was a good day for me and the team. We've had a hard time of late, but I expected to have difficult times in joining the team."
