Alan Irvine sacked by Sheffield Wednesday after poor run

Sheffield Wednesday have sacked manager Alan Irvine after little more than a year in charge.

Last night's 5-3 defeat at Peterborough - the club's sixth League match in a row without a win - was the last straw for chairman Milan Mandaric.

"It is unfortunate, but this had to take place," said Mandaric. "The decision has been made on what is in the best interests of the club. We will be making further announcements in due course."

Irvine signed a three-and-a-half year contract when he replaced Brian Laws as manager in January 2010, a month after being axed by Preston. Former Wednesday player Gary Megson and ex-Crystal Palace, Charlton and Coventry boss Iain Dowie have emerged as early candidates to replace Irvine.
