Alexis Sanchez has become just the fifth Arsenal player to reach 20 Premier League goals in a season with his latest goal for the Gunners.

Sanchez's goal against Southampton sees the Chilean join Thierry Henry, Ian Wright, Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor on a roll call of some of the finest Arsenal forwards of recent years.

Sanchez had come close to reaching the mark during his first season at Arsenal, where he scored 16 in the top flight, and even contributed 13 during a relatively disappointing second term at the Emirates.

He is now just one goal short of 50 league goals for the Gunners.

After his winning goal in the FA Cup semi-final triumph over Manchester City Arsene Wenger was glowing in his assessment of his star forward, who he still hopes will sign a new contract to extend his three year stay at Arsenal.

“He has been remarkably efficient,” Wenger said. “I felt that he had a very good spell when he played up front. When he plays on the flank, he’s more a provider than a goalscorer.

“At the moment he plays in a mixed role between the flank and the middle. He can always turn up with something special in the game.”
