Andros Townsend targetting double figure goal return to beat Scott Dann in Crystal Palace scoring bet

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend may have made an ill-advised bet at the start of the season when he challenged club captain Scott Dann to a battle to top the scoring charts.

Dann has already netted five goals in 2016, three of which have come since the start of this season, and added to his tally on Sunday as Palace romped to a 4-1 home victory over Stoke.

The win also saw Townsend find the net for the first time since his £13million move from Newcastle and he admits he will have some catching up to do if he is to beat Dann, setting himself a target of 10 or more goals in the coming months.

“Me and Scott had a friendly bet who would score more goals this season,” Townsend told reporters. “Seeing him go 3-0 up, I knew I had to claw it back before it was too late!

“I have given him a bit of a head start this season! Scott is a fantastic player. He is always up there with the top scoring centre-backs and is doing it again this season. I am sure he will get a few more.

“I want to be in double figures. I have not really set a goal; I think it is too early in the season to set goals. I just want to perform like I did today and be effective. Just one more than Scott would be nice.

"There is no prize between us – just pride. We are two proud players and I think pride is enough.”
