Antoine Griezmann's crucial away goal against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night booked Atletico Madrid's place in the Champions League final despite the Spanish side losing their semi-final second leg 2-1.

Atletico arrived in Germany with a 1-0 lead courtesy of Saul Niguez's superb first-leg goal at the Vicente Calderon but, after a tight first 30 minutes, it was the hosts who took the lead through Xabi Alonso's free kick which deflected into the goal.

Things then threatened to go from bad to worse for the visitors after Jose Gimenez pulled back Javi Martinez in the area, which earned the Atletico man a booking and handed Bayern a penalty.

However, Thomas Muller - back in the team after being dropped for the first leg - drove straight at Jan Oblak, whose fine stop kept the score at 1-0.

Atletico emerged after the break fired up, and when Fernando Torres delivered a fine through-ball for Griezmann, the Frenchman did not wither in front of Manuel Neuer and calmly fired the ball past the German star to give Los Rojiblancos a 2-1 aggregate lead.

Five-time Champions League winners Bayern responded 20 minutes later, however, when Robert Lewandowski headed in from close range, before the hosts were then let off the hook when Torres' penalty - awarded for Martinez's foul just outside the box - was saved by Neuer.

Atletico held on and despite losing the second leg 2-1, the Spanish side sealed their place in the final with a 2-2, away-goals victory.

The result means that Bayern - managed by Pep Guardiola, who will take charge of Manchester City next season - have been knocked out of the semi-final stage of the Champions League for the third season running, while Atletico are through to their third Champions League final.
