Arsenal are expected to begin contract talks with Jack Wilshere regardless of how long Arsene Wenger delays a decision over his own future.

Wilshere has 14 months left on his contract and would prefer to stay with the Gunners having been pushed into a hastily arranged season’s loan to Bournemouth in the final few days of the transfer window last summer.

The 25-year-old instigated the move after he was told by Wenger that first-team opportunities would be limited at Emirates Stadium this season. Wilshere wants to ensure he is a prominent part of future plans but uncertainty remains over who will be the club’s manager next term.

Wenger is keen to sign a two-year contract extension but is unsure whether the conditions will exist for him to do so with fan unrest growing.

Wilshere is set to be offered terms but is likely to wait for confirmation over Wenger’s future, as will Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who have the same amount of time remaining on their deals.
