Brad Friedel is first summer buy for Redknapp

11 April 2012

Tottenham have made their first signing of the summer by clinching a deal for goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

The former Aston Villa player, 40, has moved to White Hart Lane on a two-year contract, meaning the club now have three senior keepers - Friedel, Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini - fighting for a one spot.

It remains to be seen whether Gomes is still at Spurs when the transfer window closes but boss Harry Redknapp said: "Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality. It's good to have three such experienced goalkeepers at the club - it means we have competition for places."

The club are still attempting to bring in a top-class forward and have had a second bid of about £13million rejected for Brazilian striker Leandro Damiao.

Spurs remain hopeful of reaching an agreement because of a tie-up they have with Damiao's club, Internacional, which paved the way for the £8m signing of Sandro last summer.

Spurs are also understood to be interested in forward Antonio Pedroza, 20, who plays for Jaguares in Mexico but was born in Chester.
