Carlos Tevez today claimed he was close to quitting football over his battle with Roberto Mancini at Manchester City.

The Argentine joined Juventus this summer, even though City showed Mancini the door after failing to retain the Premier League title.

The pair fell out the season before last, Tevez refusing to warm up for a Champions League game and then going absent without leave for months. He said: “I always said I’d retire at 28 and I was close to retiring after the fight with Roberto. I was tired as well. I spent six years in England and nobody would have given a cent for me to stay six years in England.

“I won the Champions League with Manchester United, the Premier League with United, the FA Cup with City, who hadn’t won anything for a long time, I won everything.”

Tevez’s career in England was mired in controversy from the moment he signed for West Ham in August 2006.

The Hammers were fined £5million by for breaching rules governing third-party ownership but no points were deducted and Tevez was permitted to play in the final three games of the season. West Ham then had to pay £20m compensation to Sheffield United after surviving relegation and sending the Yorkshire club down.
