Juventus vs Ajax: Italian police on high alert for Champions League second leg in Turin

Standard Sport16 April 2019

Italian police are on alert ahead of Juventus’s Champions League quarter-final second leg after stopping 54 Ajax fans on the outskirts of Turin last night.

Police stopped two buses of supporters and confiscated knives, fireworks, pepper spray, flares, a hammer and a baton.

Supporters from both sides clashed before last Wednesday’s first leg, which finished 1-1. Water cannons were used in Amsterdam and more than 100 fans were arrested.

Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini tweeted: “We’re fighting against every type of violence inside and outside stadiums. Certain delinquents should never step foot in a football ground again.”

Salvini added that the fans will be led away to the border.

Meanwhile, Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri is ready to welcome back Cristiano Ronaldo after he was rested for Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at SPAL.

Ronaldo, 34, scored his 25th goal of the season in Amsterdam and Allegri said: “Cristiano has extraordinary quality. In certain moments he becomes an unstoppable player and you can see it on his face.”

Juve’s Mario Mandzukic will miss the game with a knee injury, while Ajax hope Frenkie de Jong, who injured his hamstring on Saturday, will be fit to play.
