Roy Hodgson got his first win as Crystal Palace manager on a night when Pape Souare returned to first-team football a year after he was involved in a serious car accident.

A first-half header from Bakary Sako gave Palace a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup.

But the night belonged to Souare, who started on the bench but came on at half-time to make a remarkable return to the Palace side.

The defender feared he would never walk again when he was involved in a horrific traffic crash last September and has said he feels lucky to be alive.

Souare had a solid 45 minutes at left-back as Palace progressed to the fourth round.

There was more positive news for Palace with Mamadou Sakho making his first start since his £26million deadline day move from Liverpool.

Sakho is still short of full fitness but Palace looked a lot more assured with his presence at the back. He played 68 minutes before he was taken off.

Sako scored the only goal after 12 minutes when he headed home unmarked from an Andros Townsend corner.

It was hardly a classic but Hodgson will be pleased to see Palace win.

The Eagles now face a daunting trio of fixtures in the Premier League against Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea as they look to climb off the bottom of the table after five defeats from their opening five games.
