Crystal Palace have made a late move for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland, with Wayne Hennessey sidelined until next year.

The Eagles No2 is expected to be out until February through injury, meaning Palace have moved quickly to secure cover for Vicente Guaita in the form of Butland, who has not featured for Stoke this season having fallen out of favour.

The 27-year-old has nine England caps to his name and was handed his Three Lions debut by Palace boss Roy Hodgson in 2012, starting in a 2-1 win over Italy.

Liverpool had been linked with a move for Butland, with former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian struggling as the deputy at Anfield, while Southampton had also been keen earlier on in the window.

Butland would become the fifth new arrival at Palace since last season, with Eberechi Eze, Michy Batshuayi and Nathan Ferguson all signed during the regular transfer window, while academy graduate Nathaniel Clyne was handed a short-term deal having become a free agent.

The former Liverpool right-back has been brought in as extra cover at right-back, with the club taking a cautious approach to Ferguson's recovery from the long-term knee injury which saw his move to south London scuppered in January.

Clyne is keen for first team minutes and has settled quickly back at Selhurst Park.

“I know a lot of the players here from before, and with Liverpool and England," he said.

“I know him [Hodgson] previously from being England manager. I worked with him, know his style of football and training is similar to how it was with England. I’ve adapted pretty well and have a good relationship with him.”
