Declan Rice has turned down a deal at West Ham that would have seen him collect £20,000 every time he started a Premier League game.
The Hammers remain hopeful of agreeing a new contract with the 19-year-old, whose deal — worth about £3,000 a week — expires at the end of next season.
Standard Sport understands West Ham’s most recent offer would have earned Rice about £15,000 per week, with an increase after every 15 Premier League games.
This has been rejected by Rice, whose representatives favour a higher basic salary with fewer add-ons.
The London-born Rice must also decide, in the near future, whether to continue to make himself available for the Republic of Ireland, who he has represented at age-group levels up to the senior team, or switch to England who have shown an interest in his future.
Rice, who qualifies for the Republic through his Irish father, has asked for more time to consider his options.
West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic, who missed last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea, has returned to training and should be available for Saturday’s visit of Manchester United.
Javier Hernandez, who has been out for almost two weeks with a virus, could also have recovered in time to be included in the squad for West Ham’s EFL Cup tie against Macclesfield.
Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini won this competition in his first season in charge at Manchester City, beating Sunderland the in 2014 final, and again two years later when City won a penalty shootout against Liverpool after a 1-1 draw.
He said: “It is a very important competition and the experience of winning at Wembley in front of your supporters is something that stays with you forever.”
