Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has signed a new contract to stay at the club until 2022.

The Argentine's deal was due to expire at the end of next season, but the new deal will take his stay at the Spanish club beyond a decade.

Simeone's affiliation with the club began as a player, in two separate spells, between 1994-97 and 2003-05.

He became manager in 2011, despite a six month stint at Italian side Catania being his only previous managerial experience in Europe.

Since then, he has challenged the El Clasico dominance of Spanish football, winning the Copa del Rey in 2012/13 and LaLiga a year later.

On the continent, he has guided Atletico to two Champions League finals, losing both to Madrid rivals Real, and won two Europa Leagues.

He has also overseen the club's succesful migration from the Vicente Calderon to new stadium the Wanda Metropolitano.
