Eric Dier: There's a lot more to come from Tottenham in the future

Eric Dier is convinced there is plenty more to come from Tottenham in the years to come after their ambitious title charge marked them out as a growing force in the top flight.

Though Monday’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea marked a disappointing end to Spurs’ hopes of catching Leicester and claiming a first top flight crown in over half a century few inside or outside White Hart Lane could have hoped the season would end with automatic Champions League qualification, as it will if Tottenham can claim a point from their final two league games.

The likes of Dier, Harry Kane and Dele Alli make up one of the youngest squads in the Premier League, whilst 44-year-old Mauricio Pochettino has proven himself to be among Europe’s most highly-regarded managers since arriving at Tottenham in 2014.

“This is only the beginning for this group of players,” said Dier. “It’s the first season we’ve all been together and to see what we’ve done is fantastic.

“But there is a lot more to come from this team. It’s a young squad and we will learn from a lot of experiences this season. That’s what we have to do, learn from this season, take those lessons into next season and try to do better. I think we will definitely improve next season.”

Back-to-back draws with West Brom and Chelsea ended Tottenham’s title hopes but Spurs can still cap a remarkable season by finishing above local rivals Arsenal for the first time since 1995.

To do so they will need to claim just one win from a challenging final pair of games, and they will need to secure those without Dier’s regular midfield colleagues Dele Alli, suspended for violent conduct, and, in all likelihood, Mousa Dembele, who is facing the same charge from the Football Association after an incident with Diego Costa in Monday’s tempestuous draw at Stamford Bridge.

Ronald Koeman’s Southampton side are Tottenham’s first opponents and, fresh from an impressive 4-2 victory over Champions League semi-finalists Manchester City, Dier knows they will offer a formidable test for Spurs.

“Southampton are a very good team in good form and they proved that last week against Manchester City,” he added. “It will be a tough match but we’re confident and we want to give the fans something to cheer about in the last home match of the season.

“We want to go out on a high. That would be the ideal finish at home for us and for the fans.”

Spurs end their season with a trip to Newcastle, whose Premier League future may be depending on the outcome of the final day meeting.
